Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) is living the suburban dream with her husband Bill (Joshua Jackson) and their four children in the idyllic town of Shaker Heights, Ohio. A journalist for the local paper, she knows everyone and is liked by everyone. When single mother Mia Warren (Kerry Washington) and her teenage daughter Pearl (Lexi Underwood) move to town and take a look at Elena's rental home, Elena decides to bend her own rules so the struggling artist can have a nice home for her daughter, who has never had a room of her own.
However, Elena's kind gesture causes unforeseen changes that upend both of their lives. It also exacerbates the strain between Elena and her youngest daughter, Izzy (Megan Stott), an nonconformist who is bullied at school by her peers and teased at home by her brothers Trip (Jordan Elsass) and Moody (Gavin Lewis), and her popular sister Lexie (Jade Pettyjohn).
