Jennifer Lawrence reveals why she's 'incredibly rude' to fans

Published By Marriska Fernandes on Nov 30, 2017

Jennifer LawrenceOscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, 27, may be a goofball on the red carpet, but she has a different side to her when it comes to taking selfies.

The actress sat down with Adam Sandler for Variety Studio's Actors on Actors series and admitted that she is incredibly mean to fans as a defense mechanism.

"Once I enter a public place I become incredibly rude, I turn into a huge a**. That’s kind of like my only way of defending myself."

She even demonstrated the icy glare she gives people when she sees them approaching her at a restaurant. She also admitted that when people request selfies, she shoots them down with a sharp "No!"

"That’s like my only defense. One of my best friends is Amy Schumer. I take my dog to the park all the time, Central Park. As soon as I meet her in the park, we’re f***."

Sandler admitted that in his experience, fans go so far as to "pull up a chair" when he's at a restaurant and then ask for photos. He said: "They go, 'Hey Adam, could I get a picture?' And I always say, 'You don’t want that, man.' And the guy goes, 'What?' and I go, 'You don’t want that. What are you going to do with it?' And then he’s like, 'Yeah, yeah. I don’t.'"

Here's your lesson for today: Stay away from the star's dinner table, folks! ~Marriska Fernandes

I don't like either one of them. Not a fan.

Over and over again I can see how it could get tedious...but they would be nothing without their adoring fans...then THEY'LL be the ones asking if someone wants a picture with them.

I imagine it does get tedious. But then I would think about my millions and how fortunate I am in my life, and I would remember to always pay my respects to the people who support and really, pay for my career.

"One of my best friends is Amy Schumer" ... enough said. Ugh

So Miss Priss, if you don't want the attention then you shouldn't have chosen that profession....It comes with the territory....she must be forgetting that all her fans whom she is so rude to are put her where she is...without them she wouldn't be worth over $100 million dollars...that's just being a bitch to all your fans who put her on the map....

I get them wanting their privacy and the problem of the overboard paparazzi and celebrity crazed world, however, it seems as though they do forget that every penny they earn is because people like them and buy tickets, then buy their endorsements, and magazines with them on the cover. Also, what the people are buying is not an "essential service". We could live without their entertainment profession or at least them. There will always be others who can do their job. Again, the wrong people are making way too much money. Think about surgeons, obstetricians, firefighters, etc etc. (Our vets can barely get health coverage)

Karen, what you are saying is no different than rape victims who hear "well you shouldnt have worn skimpy outfits". Just because she chose a spotlight career does NOT give other people the right to invade her space. If you want to be a real fan of someone, be respectful of their space. Paparazzi already does enough damage. I dont get why people think this is ok behaviour.

No need to be rude to anyone. These overpaid, spoiled rotten actors would be nothing without the fans. If you don't appreciate the fans then leave the profession! These idiots should try working a real job and try living on crap wages and they would soon see how pampered they are. They all wipes their assess the same as us poor folk. So suck it up buttercup and lose your attitude!

  9. Chuchi • 11/30/2017 2:32:39 PM

I think they forget why they are celebrities. I think we should ignore them completely and boycott anything they touch. THEY will be the ones begging to have their picture taken with the 'common folk'. Snobs.

Jennifer, Enjoy your popularity while it last. Remember you won't be popular all the time, in the future nobody will ask for your picture. What a turn off.

Where is it written that to become an actor, you must give up the right to privacy from that day forward? They don't owe fans every second of their time. Sometimes people make me shake my head in disbelief at their lack of emotional intelligence and ability to respect actor's and their personal lives. They don't owe you 24hrs of their lives. They have just as much right to their boundaries as anyone. It's like asking a doctor for free medical advice when they're not working because they chose that profession and took an oath. Go to a fan event if you want an autograph. You're a jerk if you interrupt a private meal with claims that they owe you.

"These overpaid, spoiled rotten actors would be nothing without the fans." - So wrong! Why do fans take things so personally? Jennifer Lawrence is a talented actress and she owes her success to her hard work, her acting ability, her family, her professional support team and a little bit of luck. The only thing she owes her fans is doing a good job in her movies. She does not owe her success to her fans. Fans should try making it as an actor by going to auditions then they'll see where success really comes from. The fans are along for the ride if they like her performances and her movies. Acting is a job and she's got plenty of work to do promoting her films and her career giving interviews, etc. So when she's not on the job. She needs privacy and peace and quiet to recharge. I love movies and I love actors, directors, cinematographers etc. I've done background acting in feature films for years and I've met some big stars on the set. The set is a wonderful workplace unlike any other if your a film buff. I've never once asked any famous actor for an autograph or a selfie but working on the set I've felt like part of the same team and I've gotten a free education on film making and acting by observation. That's plenty. Who needs an autograph when a smile will do. :)

Calm down people, she is more than happy to take pictures and sign autographs at movie events I have seen her and she is great. I do agree with them that coming up to someone when they are out for dinner is rude, they are "off work" how would you like it???? There is a place and a time to ask but when they are out with say their family or friends and "off duty" leave them alone, they are people too.

  15. Thin line • 11/30/2017 5:46:47 PM

There is a thin line between entitled and privacy that no one understands. Just because I support an Adam Sandler movie or a Jennifer Lawrence movie am I entitled to disturb their privacy because I want a picture? It's like them showing up on my doorstep and trying to get in my space uninvited. People think that just because they see a famous person off hours it's an open invitation to harass them for pics and autographs. It's selfish rude and disrespectful. If you disagree with me then the next time you get calls from a telemarketer, a jahovas witness knocks at your door or someone uninvited shows up at your house, then you'll see.

I get why people`s reactions have been mostly negative. I always say to my family members watch the way you word things. People get different ideas from what you have said. Well my point is right here right now. If Jennifer Lawrence had choose her words a little more carefully then people would not have reacted so strongly. If she had been more precise in carefully saying when she is out with Amy Schmuer for a walk or out for dinner it would be nice to be left alone by the fans. I am like anybody else and need my private times like normal people would expect. There now doesn`t that sound 100% more nicer!!

  17. Nancy • 12/1/2017 4:05:58 PM

I think a celebrity could very kindly ask,"Would you mind waiting until I have finished my dinner? (or whatever it is the person is doing)

  18. KB • 12/1/2017 5:23:27 PM

To everyone who says 'it comes with the job' . . . no. What an entertainer owes an audience is their very best work, every time, no matter what. When the show is over, they are paid in full. The rest of their lives are theirs, you have no legitimate claim on them. And taking what you have to claim on is rude at best, but typically just criminal.

  19. Belle • 12/2/2017 12:38:20 AM

I agree with most of the comments here. Fans are what put the celebrities where they are today. If they didn't want the attention they should have chosen another profession. I am so turned off at celebrities that won't take the time to have a fan snap a photograph. What a bunch of stuck up and ungrateful people they are.

  20. Debbie • 12/2/2017 3:33:59 PM

Unfortunately or fortunately, when you are in the public eye, your life is 'open'. Some people want more attention than others. I remember when Kurt Browning, figure skater, was with his mom in public and he was getting noticed, he was rude to a fan. His mom quickly reminded him that he should be nice to the fans that appreciate him. I remember reading that Jen Aniston said she didn't care if the fans hated a movie she made. I get noticed, and am not famous, or try to get noticed. Am just being myself. I am usually kind, but I find with certain people, I am guarded. Probably like most people. On the topic, I think that being civil isn't lots to ask. I remember when I saw a few 'famous' people, I left them alone, or I was very polite. But...since people are all different, well...you know. And people will remember if you are rude. As much as stars think their careers are intact, I think being civil again, is better. And...even though if we all knew each star personally and our opinions of them may change, it maybe shouldn't affect how we see their work. But being rude can affect their career, I suppose. Just reading this article may have influenced me a bit.

  21. Debbie • 12/2/2017 3:46:01 PM

I guess the more you know about the personal life of a star, the more it may influence your decision to want to see their work. What is sad though, the rules apply to some people, and some not. Bluntly, some people get fired and some not. I am commenting on personal versus business. And...if JLaw is rude to protect herself, it can also have the opposite effect. Just saying...

can understand that people should learn to be more polite when they want a picture, as no one really likes to be taken in pictures, check the special of the BEATLES - RON HOWARD, they stopped touring as they were boxed in, women went too crazy. The fans demand now ,try to make money off pictures and forget their is a Human Being behind their profession, who are mostly shy to begin with

  24. GD • 12/8/2017 2:02:06 PM

If someone approached me while eating I would say "It's nice to meet you. Could you please give me a few minutes to finish up and I will come over and chat or take photos with you." That way you don't alienate people. Look at Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) for being a huge bitch with fans. Some young tweens snapped her photo while eating so she took to Twitter callung them F--- rude. Another time she said nobody is entitled to me. One time an excited slightly tipsy fan saw her and Cole Sprouse in public. She put her arm around them and alledgedly they told her to F-- off. It goes both ways if we behave properly and so should they.
