Kit Harington regrets chauvinistic comment

Published By Alexa Caruso on Oct 26, 2017

Kit HaringtonKit Harington has apologized for a comment he made last year about the sexism he feels men face in Hollywood.

The Game of Thrones heartthrob said in an interview with The Sunday Times that it's not just women who have to deal with sexism in the industry. "I think there is a double standard," he said at the time. "I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks. It's demeaning. Yes, in some ways you could argue I've been employed for a look I have. But there's a sexism that happens towards men."

He was referencing the fact that he believes he only landed his starring role as Jon Snow on the hit HBO series Game of Thrones because of his looks.

Many felt the comment made Kit sound ungrateful for his big Hollywood break and was insensitive since men do not face nearly the same level of judgement and amount of harassment as women do, especially in the entertainment industry.

This is an issue that's been touched on quite a bit lately with the recent Harvey Weinstein sexual assault and rape scandal and is also particularly evident in the noticeable pay gap between the genders, which has prompted many women in film, such as Jessica Chastain, to speak out against the unfair difficulties women face in filmmaking, among other industries.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Kit has backpedaled, saying his comment last year was "wrong." He explains that he misspoke: "Sexism against men is not something I should have really said. I think what I meant was, being objectified. At that time, I did feel objectified, and now I've learned how to control that."

Kit went on to say he has been objectified in the past, but he admits men do not share the same situation as women: "Do I think my position in society is the same as a woman's in society? No. They're very different things, and I should have separated them. I was wrong."

good back peddle. For sure they are 2 different things... BUT it can be hard for men too.

He is right. Most movie goers are women and they want to look at eye candy. Does anyone really think that guys don't get jobs in TV and movies because the way that they look ?? If you don't believe it, you are very naive !!!!!!

He was perfectly right the first time. It doesn't matter what gender you are, if you are objectified than you are being objectified. Kit Harington knows a thing or two about being objectified, thousands of people tweeted about his butt after the GoT finale.

Men and Women get objectified. And both experience the Harassment. Men just deal with it differently, because we've been told that what we experience, isnt the same as what women experience. It doesnt make it any less of a bad thing should it happen to men. If women expect men to change, Women also need to look at their actions, and show some compassion when a Man speaks of his experience with Harassment and Sexual Assault.

I don't think he should have to apologize for telling the truth. He is right he probably would not have gotten the role of Jon Snow if it wasn't for his looks.

I believe Kit,when he states he meant to say objectified instead of sexism. Because their is an issue for the actors/actresses that do get objectified for their looks. But,I disagree that he got the role of Jon Snow based solely on his looks, I think Kit got the role because of his acting ability, his looks were just an added bonus.

How about you just shut your gob, boy? You sign up for being "objectified" on the screen, ffs. Women do not sign up for sexual assault.
