Published By Marriska Fernandes on Feb 27, 2017

Mahershala AliLast night, one of the most prestigious awards were handed out: the Oscars. The 89th annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The evening was nothing short of entertaining as the stars walked the red carpet and some took home the highly coveted statuette.

The best was saved for last as the Oscars ended on a bizarre note. Presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner and after the entire cast and crew got on stage and were giving their acceptance speeches, it was revealed that Barry JenkinsMoonlight was, in fact, the winner.

Beatty clarified that he had an incorrect envelope. It was quite an Oscar moment, leaving everyone stunned and speechless.

Yes, the Oscars pulled a Steve Harvey. However, Jenkins didn't let an envelope flub stop him from accepting his award. He said: "Even in my dreams this could not be true. But, to hell with my dreams, this is true!"

As expected, Damien Chazelle won Best Director for La La Land while Emma Stone took home the award for Best ActressAs for Best Actor, Casey Affleck bagged the statuette for his performance in Manchester By the Sea, beating out Ryan Gosling.

This year’s award season favorite Mahershala Ali won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work Moonlight. Fences star Viola Davis took home a golden statuette for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Davis gave a heartfelt acceptance speech that was quickly trending on social media. She said: "You know, there’s one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered. One place, and that’s the graveyard. People ask me all the time, 'What kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?' And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories. The stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost. I became an artist — and thank God I did — because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life." Davis is the first black woman to win an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony for acting.
