Pirates of the Caribbean 5 sails into first at weekend box office

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No TalesIt looks like Johnny Depp and the Pirates had smooth sailing into Memorial Day, with the latest offering, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, dominating the box office this weekend. Also debuting this week was the film adaptation Baywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the series, continues its history of strong debuts claiming the top spot. The film raked in $78.5 million at the weekend box office and collected a strong 3.9 out of 5 rating from our users.

Remaining in second place was the galactic superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2which is in its fourth week of release. The film brought in a solid $27.2 million over the weekend, making its domestic total a whopping $340.5 million. Our users enjoyed the movie, giving it a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars.

Looking to stay afloat was Baywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson and his crew of lifeguards. The film swam into the third spot, grossing $23.1 million over its debut weekend. Our users rated the film 3 out of 5 stars.

It looks like the weekend box office battle in space has come to an end, with Alien: Covenant falling back to Earth. The movie dropped from the top spot to fourth place, even failing to edge out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in its second week of release. The film grossed $13.4 million at the weekend box office, making its domestic total $60.2 million. Our users gave it a 2.9 star rating.

    Of course, Pirates is back. That's Depps bread and butter. Keeps him relevant for another year.
