Ryan Seacrest is joining Live as Kelly Ripa's new permanent co-anchor, giving the former host of the TV series American Idol a new platform.
Kelly and Ryan announced the surprising news at the start of Monday’s episode of the show. This exciting news comes almost a year after Michael Strahan left the show for an anchor spot on Good Morning America.
Kelly, who has hosted the show since 2001, worked with several different co-hosts while searching for a replacement, including Andy Cohen and Fred Savage. Ryan has also spent time as a co-host with Kelly in the past year before accepting the full time gig. His last appearance on the show was the post-Oscars episode Feb. 27.
“Not only is Kelly Ripa one of the most talented live hosts in broadcast TV; she’s also become a very dear friend to me over the years. It’s consistently been my privilege and pleasure to work alongside Kelly with all her incredible talents, charm and humor,” said Ryan.
“I’ve been so fortunate in my career to be a part of some incredible TV programs, and I’m excited to join daytime’s top entertainment talk show, and most important, I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather share this new chapter with than Kelly Ripa -- she’s a dream broadcast partner, and I can’t wait to start.”
Live is based in New York City. Ryan currently lives in Los Angeles, but also has a home in Manhattan, and will be moving to New York. According to Hollywood Reporter, he will also be an executive producer on the show. ~Brenden Zerihun
