The Invitation snags the top spot at the weekend box office

The Invitation starring Nathalie EmmanuelThe new horror film The Invitation debuted at the top of the box office in what was a fairly slow weekend in theaters as people enjoy the last weeks of summer. The film took in a total of $7 million.

The action-comedy Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt rose from fourth place to second, bringing in another $5.6 million for a four-week domestic total of $78.2 million.

Beast starring Idris Elba, which released last weekend, dropped one spot to third place, earning an additional $4.9 million for a two-week total of $20.1 million.

Top Gun: Maverick stayed in fourth place this weekend, still going strong in its 14th weekend since releasing in theaters. With Tom Cruise reprising his role in the sequel to the 1986 movie, the film earned an extra $4.8 million for a total of $691.2 million.

Experiencing a huge drop in popularity from its first place finish last weekend was the animated action film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which rounded out the top five with an additional $4.6 million and a two-week total of $30.8 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
