Dunkirk soldiers its way to top of weekend box office

Dunkirk movie posterThree new wide-release films hit theaters this weekend and earned their place in the top box office chart. Dunkirk won the title of box office champion while Girls Trip secured the second spot in its opening weekend. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets rounded out the top five.

Nerve-racking WWII thriller Dunkirk, from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, won audiences over, earning $50.5 million at the domestic box office. Our audiences gave the film a stellar 4.5 out of 5 stars. The film gives an account of the early days of World War II when thousands of Allied soldiers were trapped on the beach of the French coastal town of Dunkirk and faced an impossible crisis.

A wild ladies' night out was clearly a win with the women as Girls Trip secured the second position. The film, which brings together Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith as they try to relive their college days in New Orleans, earned $31.2 million at the domestic box office this weekend with a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, which features the slim-suited hero fighting crime in his teenage years, dropped to the third spot this past weekend. It earned $22.2 million at the domestic box office, making its total gross a whopping $251.7 million. Our audiences are enjoying the web-swinging adventure, giving it 3.1 out of 5 stars.

War for the Planet of the Apes dropped to the fourth spot in its second weekend out. The film, which finds Caesar (Andy Serkis) taking up arms for Ape-kind against a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson), took in $20.8 million, making its total gross $97.8 million. It garnered a 3.6-star review from our users.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which made its debut this weekend, rounded out the top five, making $17 million. The sci-fi/fantasy film stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, who are on a mission to save the galactic city of Alpha. The film earned 3.6 out of 5 stars.
