Phoenix is a pathetic hippie and a bad actor.

Good

Really bad, boring, woke, a very 1960 Italian costume drama; endless hours of Josephine having sex with clothes on, bathing with clothes on... Black guy running around in a general's uniform, supposed to be Dumas, who was only 1/4 black and looked whiter than Obama. Biopic of a general who ran and left 3 armies to all die. History was really bad; Egypt, Moscow, Austerlitz. Stay away. I FF through most of the movie.

Napoleon was a dynamic figure to say the least, but you wouldn't know it from this terminally dry film. The casting of the massively overpraised hippie imbecile Phoenix does the film no favors. Many years ago Stanley Kubrick intended to make the ultimate biopic of Napoleon and he intended to make it the greatest film ever made. Unfortunately his financing fell through and the film was never made. All we have now is a hairlipped reminder of what might have been. Waah-waaah!

I liked the story, since I knew almost nothing about Napoleon. I root for short guys, being short myself. Pretty wife, yum. Was Napoleon as calm as he's portrayed, I wonder

It was too long and Dry it moved super slow & just got boring I was disappointed that this was a Riddly Scott movie

User review rating: 3 December 28, 2023

In a superb cast which includes Vanessa Kirkby and Rupert Brooke, and in a film set in nineteenth century Europe, Joaquin Phoenix's flat American monotone and stilted acting are jarring. Did no one else audition for the role?

Amazing battle scenes. Stupid sex scenes!

User review rating: 3 December 20, 2023

Too much about the romance.

User review rating: 2 December 17, 2023

Not worthwhile. Majorly disappointing in every way. Usually when movies are this bad they’re good but not this time.

User review rating: 2 December 17, 2023

what a waste of production money, being directed by ridley scott I expected A LOT more

User review rating: 5 December 14, 2023

Big Budget movie and epic battle scenes that tells the story of one of histories greatest leader. From his humble begining as he was a corporal, general, consul, and emperor.

User review rating: 5 December 13, 2023

Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely amazing.

I heard of Napoleon but never really read about him. It's one interesting movie to see. Especially to learn about his life in short time. Seeing it the first time in theater after many years missing, it brings back memories. Now gotta read more just to compare this movie to.

it was a really good movie with good action scenes but his hat reminded me of someone wearing Micky mouse ears, i chuckled a bit when a gunshot went through his hat and made a round hole.

Unfortunately this picture misses the chance of being an epic picture like the movies of the late 50s and early 60s. Napoleon was the most brilliant of the generals on the battlefield with close to 70 verified victories. There is far too much controversy and intrigue in and off the battlefield, especially concerning his rise to power, to include in this story. I do not understand why the battle scenes were filmed with a grey filter or something similar and, at Waterloo, it was in broad daylight. The mud playing an important part of the tactical maneuvers as well. That battle alone could be 2 hours in telling as in the Dino de Laurentis film of 1970 which I actually saw at the theater. These pathetic, clueless, little creatures( the trolls), who give it one star, never even saw the movie or know anything about military history of that period and how could you possibly fall asleep during this movie is beyond me. It would have been much better to have told a segment of his life and victories then his grand defeat than attempting a full biography of his complicated, military life.

I liked it and would see it again. The Actors and picture well put together. Very informative. Phoenix did a good job As Nopolian and Josephine also well done.🙌🙌 to both actors

User review rating: 2 December 07, 2023

Poorly written script with one of the best actors of our time.

I was excited to see a film about Napoleon but found the story hard to follow and some of the sex and battle scenes a bit "over the top" but I imagine in reality it was that way so . . ??? My friend and I needed note cards to remember who each character was as it jumped around. I had basic information about Napoleon but a very thorough knowledge of the history and geographical areas was needed in order to stay up with the plot.

Ridley diddly.

User review rating: 3 December 03, 2023

Wanted to love it but it missed the mark. It would have been better if the writers had actually told the story of Napoleon’s actual life.

Lordy, this was the dullest movie I've seen in years. In fact I slept through a good part of it. Phoenix's performance in the title role made a piece of damp cardboard look interesting. And all the outdoor scenes were filmed through a weird grey filter, which added to the pervasive sense of ennui. Incidentally, the sex scenes were cringey and nasty, so for goodness sake don't take young kids to see this film. Two thumbs down.

Garbage. I had such high hopes going in, and I don't even know where to begin. So I won't.

I liked the movie. It told a good story. Acting was good. Scenes depicted in the movie were not excessive in length like some action movies. Whether it is true to history or not it told a story of a little man who like some other men in history tried to conquer the world so to speak. It came to my mind that WW 1 started 100 years later. These small minded men have and were and still are fighting just to conquer. As in WW2 the Germans couldn’t conquer Russia because of the cold winter.

Regardless of its accuracy, it is still a good film. Joaquin is a great fit for the role, and the story is adventurous and intriguing. If you want a full biography of Napoleon, a 2 hr film will obviously disappoint. Go pick up a history book instead of review-bombing if youre dissatisfied :)

User review rating: 2 November 30, 2023

Too ponderous. Too much left out. Completely underwhelming. And yeah, the person below who is having a fit over the use of 'hairlip' (still acceptable) should really get help for their fragility (not to mention their odious racism). Skip this movie.

The most fun I've had at the movies in a long, long, time! 5/5

It seems like you just did, “bully” me !! I am a medical person and the only people still referring to people who were unfortunately born with a cleft lip are white trash bullies who don’t know any better. Maybe that’s what you learned growing up, to bully the misfortunate.

User review rating: 1 November 29, 2023

Cleft lip... it's also called hairlip. And people who don't have the grammar skills of a third-grader shouldn't be calling others idiots. Seek therapy at once. I'm not one of the people who bullied you over your hairlip.

User review rating: 4 November 29, 2023

“Hairlip” ? It is called a “cleft lip” you idiot !!!!! Aren’t you full of yourself !

I LOVED A LOT of this flick. JP's acting job, amongst Many- the sheer SCOPE of it is not often seen these days. It was Quite the History Lesson, as Well. Seems fairly comprehensive, except towards the ignominious End to his storied military and political Career, anyway. And......I LIKE the SEX, for a Change! Seeing what made him 'tick', whether it had any basis in Reality is another matter, of course. But seeing him as a Man, not just the military icon and 'tyrant', was Great- for ME. The END of his Life though - it got very thin, and a little depressing.....but all in ALL...WAY Better than Most of what is SPEWING FORTH from Hollywild these days. A STANDOUT, for SURE!

Enjoyed it immensely. Should do very well at this year's Oscars. See it on the biggest screen possible.

User review rating: 5 November 27, 2023

Never a dull moment. Although the story is familiar, it's exciting to be taken into it through the life of a complicated man. Well done.

User review rating: 1 November 27, 2023

I'm pretty sure Bonaparte didn't have a hairlip.

User review rating: 2 November 26, 2023

This may be part of a larger series, but the Napoleon that everyone wants is a 10 hour trilogy, a la Lord of the Rings, with fully fleshed out battle scenes, strategy, psychology, and legacies of the French Revolution to the modern world. Why was there a revolution? Why was Napoleon not the final answer? How did Europe change after Napoleon? Joaquin Phoenix was definitely miscast and is about as authentic as Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. Basically the only reason to see it is because someone had the audacity to try.

User review rating: 3 November 26, 2023

The sexual was too explicit and not necessary in this film. We did not need to know about his private sexual desires and habits. More time should have been given to the planning of the battles and so on. Maybe a bit of a biography about Napoleon as well. The sex scenes classifies it as rated R and not family friendly or appropriate for younger viewers who are learning about history.

User review rating: 4 November 25, 2023

Gotta love Joaquin Phoenix. He's oddly amusing no matter what he's doing. Personally, I didn't know much about Napoleon. What I did learn was very negative. This movie fleshes him out humanely. Some people actually liked him. Music was fitting. Fight scenes were appropriately awful. I hope they didn't kill all those horses!

User review rating: 1 November 25, 2023

Emotionally devoid of dramatic involvement. Unfocused screenwriting and stale plot. Hollow characters. Napoleon’s life story should have developed into a solid mini-series following his youth, rise to political and military powers, and eventual fall on his last days on a secluded island. D+

Definitely not for children. I found it dragged out and boring in a lot of spots. Overall, I wouldn’t go see it again. Knew most of it through my school days and I was expecting g more but didn’t get it.
