Meryl Streep rumored to take flight in Mary Poppins sequel

meryl streepMary Poppins may just have some sterling new company -- and an extra splash of magic -- from the likes of Meryl Streep.

The three-time Oscar winner is reportedly circling a supporting role in Disney's upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, which Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda have already been confirmed in.

According to rumors, Meryl has her golden eye set on the part of Mary Poppins' cousin Topsy, a character not included in the classic 1964 original film.

If Meryl does indeed pick up a spoonful of sugar and join the project, she'd be reunited with her Into the Woods family, including costar Emily, director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The 2014 fantasy musical earned Meryl her unprecedented 19th Academy Award nomination.

Emily is slated to play the title role in the film, which Julie Andrews brought to the screen over 50 years ago, while Lin-Manuel is slated to portray a street lamplighter named Jack.

The sequel to the five-time Oscar winner will center on a grown Jane and Michael Banks — and Michael's three children — as they grapple with a recent tragedy. The story will unfold in 1930s London as Mary and Jack help reintroduce joy into the lives of the struggling Banks family.

Meryl, who made headlines earlier this week with a speech at the Democratic Convention, can be seen next in Florence Foster Jenkins, out on August 12, 2016.

Mary Poppins Returns is expected to descend into theaters on December 25, 2018.

I would literally watch Meryl pick food out of her teeth for two hours.

Can't wait for this one to come out now. I think Meryl Streep will do a "super" job.

I'm tired of Meryl. And the worst thing is, she'll probably be nominated for best supporting actress.

Meryl can do no wrong. She could play the umbrella and she'd steal every scene she's in.
